(9) HOWsession – Flight Simulation: Mechanics and Aerodynamics

On Monday the 9th of December 2019 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm*, the 9th Savannah Science Seminar** Presentation will focus on the Mechanics and Aerodynamics of Flight including Flight Operations of a Gulfstream corporate aircraft. Your Gulfstream presenters, Robert Farrell, Jim Gallagher, Dale Colter, and SSS Board Members/program facilitator Jim Gallagher along with Jim Goodlett will be your hosts at RDC III building off of the I-95 highway.

* NOTE that this seminar starts an hour earlier than normal so please be on time as there is only ONE scheduled escort to the plant. After such time, no one else will be admitted.

** This is a student only seminar due to security restrictions at Gulfstream’s plant site. Unfortunately, no parents/guardians will be allowed to accompany the student so please make your travel arrangements accordingly.

*** Students are required to bring a valid Government issued photo ID (like a Driver License or Passport) for admittance onto Gulfstream property. Safety glasses are also required and will be provided by Gulfstream. A reminder that no open toe shoes are allowed on the premises.

Biographies

Robert Farrell
Bob Farrell is currently the Manager of the Integration Test Facilities (ITFs) at Gulfstream. The ITF provides an engineering environment to develop next generation systems as well as validate current design integration. We have multiple fixed-based simulators that provide pilot-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop dynamic test capabilities. Bob has 18 years avionics development experience while working at both Honeywell and Gulfstream.

While at Gulfstream, Bob supported the GIV-SP Avionics upgrade, GV Flight Test, PlaneView Avionics upgrade for the GV-SP & GIVX. During a three-year contract with Honeywell in the Air Transport Division, he supported Flight Management System development. Bob holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is an 11-year member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Dale Colter
Dale Colter is the Director of Lab Test at Gulfstream.Dale leads the ground-based test labs comprising Structural Test, Systems Test and the Research Development Center Labs (RDC Labs). Previously, Dale was the Manager of Flight Test for Gulfstream, leading the G650 Flight Test program and the 120-person team of Flight Test Engineers, Instrumentation Engineers / Technicians, and Aircraft Maintenance technicians.

Dale currently serves as the Gulfstream representative on the Board of Directors for Starbase-Savannah (since 2011) and the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force (since 2017). He also served in the US Air Force from Oct 1985 – Jan 2006, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

His education includes a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering from Auburn University, a Masters of Science in Engineering from Mercer University, and Professional Military Education completion of Squadron Officer School and Air Command & Staff College.

Jim Gallagher
Jim Gallagher is a Program Director responsible for Customer Service in Asia. Jim supports in-service Asia fleet issues, working design, quality and operational issues for the in-service Gulfstream fleet. Jim holds a Bachelor Degree in Aeronautcal Engineering from University of Manchester; Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State and an MBA from Georgia Southern University.
